Borel Park in San Mateo is now open! At the end of August, just after the neighboring Borel Middle School was back in session, The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department removed the fencing and opened the park for use. The corner lot totaling 1.15 acres, once overgrown and not in use, is now home a beautiful recreation area. Two play areas with large climbing structures, multiple slides, merry-go-all and more can be found at the intersection of Barneson and Shafter streets. Mature trees were kept in tact to provide shade and established landscaping. Newly planted foliage has been blooming and the park looks as if it was always meant to be there. Large Adirondack chairs are placed at landings among the ADA Compliant pathways, giving respite to park-goers. Two grassy areas are available for all the lawn-play you can do and nearly all seating has a view of the playground, to keep an eye on the kids.

The play structures were built by GameTime and the woodland theme really fits the landscape well. Children seem to love climbing up inside the faux trees trunks that lead to a variety of slides and obstacles– all making for endless fun. Borel Park in San Mateo is so welcomed, and also the first new park in San Mateo since the early 2000’s– it’s sure to be host for many community members and their families for decades to come.
