Burlingame’s Famous Copenhagen Bakery and Café to Change Ownership

Copenhagen Bakery and Café in downtown Burlingame, serving delicious Danish baked goods for the last 45 years, is changing ownership. The great news is the new owners, brothers Sean and Ali Azad, are keeping the café largely as-is. They will be doing cosmetic upgrades but will retain the existing staff and baked selections.

Sean and Ali also own Max’s in Burlingame, Dahlia Mexican Grill in San Mateo, and Birk’s in Santa Clara.

The current owners, Ralf and Ben Nielsen, moved to the Bay Area as children from Copenhagen, Denmark, in the 1950s. Ralf learned the bakery business from their uncles and grandfather in their homeland. Ralf said it was not an easy choice to sell the business but is looking forward to retirement. He will stay around to ensure the transfer of ownership goes smoothly.

The new owners moved to the United States forty years ago from Iran. After working hard, Sean and Ali saved up enough to purchase a Mrs. Fields cookie store in San Francisco, and later a pizza place in Foster City.

Copenhagen Bakery and Café is located at 1216 Burlingame Avenue. Hours are 6am-6pm every day of the week.
