Filoli: The Spectacular Estate on the Peninsula for All to Enjoy

Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli features 654 acres of beauty and is nestled along the slopes of California’s costal range in Woodside. Filoli was originally built as a private residence in 1917 and was opened to the public in 1977. The property is considered one of the finest remaining country estates and features a 54,000+ s/f Georgian revival-style mansion, 16 acres of gorgeous English Renaissance gardens, a 6.8 acre orchard, and a nature preserve with 5 different ecosystems.

Filoli holds a bit of fun history and trivia, too! The estate’s name is from the once-owner’s motto: Fight, love, live, and the inspiration for the home and gardens comes straight for Muckross House and Gardens in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. The Muckross house was a heavy influence for the build of Filoli and the likeness can be seen throughout the gardens, especially. Filoli also made cameos in the original Dynasty television series and films; Heaven Can Wait and The Joy Luck Club.

Spring at Filoli is extraordinary. Guests can explore a rainbow of tulips, wisteria, daffodils, and cherry blossoms. The bulbs are planted and timed so there is spring color all season. In the mansion, the garden is brought indoors with porcelain floral motifs and lovely floral arrangements. In the Winter months, the estate transforms into a wonderland, as to not let Spring and Summer be the only shining stars. twinkling lights line the gardens in the evening and the weekend’s are filled with Santa visits and halls decked to the nines. No matter the time of year you choose to visit, it’s truly a stunning property.
